John Cairns is also famous for being only the eleventh person in piping history to win the pure “Double” – both the Argyllshire Gathering and the Northern Meeting Highland Society of London Gold Medals in one year (1999). Graham Brown is one of the world’s top pipe band snare drummers, gaining numerous top prizes prizes around the world and qualifying for the final at the World Solo Championships several times. Both of them have led the Peel Regional Police to North American Championships in 2010 and 2011.

We hope that you enjoy this talented duo, inspiring you to keep the fires burning until the season starts, or, if you live in warmer climates, as the competitions continue!

Piper competing at two World Championships in 2012
When Carsen Campbell’s parents pulled him out of ice hockey at age 12 because it was too dangerous, they gave him a rifle instead. He already was involved with cross-country skiing and the previous year had started piping lessons at the College of Piping in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, under the guidance of James Beaumont and Matthew McClain.
Â
Fast-forward five years and Campbell is one of the world’s top biathlon competitors and a piper with the College’s Grade 3 band â“ and is heading to Kontiolahti, Finland, for the Biathlon Masters International Championships in March as part of Canada’s national team and then in August to Glasgow for the World’s with his band.
Â
As a biathlon athlete, Campbell combines cross-country skiing using shorter skate skis and shooting using a .22 calibre target rifle. The similarities between biathlon and pipe band competition are there in Campbell’s mind, since both disciplines involve supreme control of nerves and breathing in stressful competition.
Â
Carsen Campbell, who currently receives instruction from College of Piping Musical Director James MacHattie, commits almost all of his waking hours to piping, biathlon training or school. He was too busy to respond to pipes|drums directly, so his mother helped out.
Â
“Carsen has always been highly competitive, and very self motivated when it’s something he wants to do he goes after it full force,” said Cheryl Campbell.

Bucksburn and District “Reignited” Concert – Saturday 10th March
In October 2010, Bucksburn & District Pipe Band, Aberdeen performed alongside top Grade 1 Pipe Band, Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia, to hold what the North-east of Scotland can only describe as one of the greatest events to take place in pipe band history for over 20 years.
Following its phenomenal success, Bucksburn and District will be holding their second concert on the 10th March 2012, and will, again, perform alongside a top Grade 1 Pipe Band, Inveraray and District.
The concert, which is one of the biggest undertakings that Bucksburn & District Pipe Band tackle, hopes that after attracting a sell-out crowd at “Fired Up!” last year, they will be able to echo that success with this concert.
Gus McAskill, Bucksburn Band President, says “It’s great to have such an event like this again here in Aberdeen. To secure a top class Grade one pipe band as talented as Inveraray & District is wonderful, not only for Bucksburn Pipe Band, but for the whole of the North East. Inveraray & District are a fantastic band with very talented players and are guided by 2 of the best in the business, Pipe Major Stuart Liddell and Leading Drummer Steven McWhirter.”
Mr. McAskill added, “Fired Up” not only inspired Bucksburn Pipe Band to continue with this venture, it also brought a community spirit within the North East Pipe Bands, a feeling and venture that must continue and will keep the interest and excitement going within the North East Pipe Band world”.
It takes place at Aberdeen Music Hall on Saturday 10th March, 7.30pm. Tickets are £17 and are available from http://www.boxofficeaberdeen.com/prod-productions_details.asp?VenueID=88&pid=2885
