For centuries the Scots used the bagpipe as a weapon of war. It was used in ancient Greece and Rome and has been long known in India. Many British folktales feature a piper and their bagpipes. It is very rousing hearing massed pipe bands playing this song at tatoos or highland games. Used-Bagpipes The three big pipes, called drones, are enclosed in a leather bag that's typically covered up with a colorful decorative bag. Most bagpipes also have additional drones (and sometimes chanters) in various combinations, held in place in stocksconnectors with which the various pipes are attached to the bag. The GHB is usually played in a standing position with the bag held between the piper's arm and side. The Highland Bagpipe in its original form was constructed from reeds. Used-Bagpipes The Highland bagpipes are the national instrument of Scotland.
The air escapes through the drones and chanter, via reeds placed within each pipe. Some examples of these tales can be found in "The Piper and the Pooka" and the "The cow that ate the Piper. However, today the notes of the chanter are usually tuned in just intonation to the Mixolydian scale. Used-Bagpipes The Highland bagpipes soon became a tradition of Scotland. I think one of the mistakes made today is to play such a powerful instrument within a confined area. There is much controversy that surrounds the history of the Highland bagpipes, but we do know it has played a significant role in Scottish and Celtic history. A set of bagpipes minimally consists of an air supply, a bag, a chanter, and usually a drone. Used-Bagpipes The GHB usually has three drones: two tenor drones tuned an octave below the chanter's low A, and a longer bass drone tuned one octave below the tenor drones. The earliest references to Scottish bagpipes are in a military context, and it is in that context that the Great Highland Bagpipe became established in the British military and in pipe bands throughout the world.
