This bagpipe is a reconstruction of a small chamber bagpipe described by Michael Praetorius in 1619. The name "Hümmelchen" derives from a Low German dialect word "humeln, hameln", meaning "to shorten a cow's horn". Thus, the meaning refers to this instrument being a small, "shortened" version of...

Though the Scottish Great Highland Bagpipe and Irish uilleann pipes have the greatest international visibility, bagpipes of several varieties can be found in use throughout Europe, Northern Africa, the Persian Gulf, and the Caucasus. The name bagpipe has almost become synonymous with its best-known form, the Great Highland Bagpipe, overshadowing the great number and variety of traditional forms of bagpipe. The Great Highland Bagpipe is classified as a woodwind instrument, like the bassoon, oboe, or clarinet. The two tenor drones are an octave below the keynote (Low A) of the chanter) and the bass drone two octaves below. Small-Bagpipes The piper produces sound by inflating the bag and applying pressure to the bag with the arm. The Highland Bagpipe in its original form was constructed from reeds. Although it is classified as a double reed instrument, the reeds are all closed inside the wooden stocks, instead of being played directly by mouth as other woodwinds are. Some examples of these tales can be found in "The Piper and the Pooka" and the "The cow that ate the Piper. Small-Bagpipes Any of an ancient family of double-reed folk woodwind instruments employing a bladder, filled by the player through a mouthpiece, or bellows as an air reservoir to a ‘chanter’ or fingered melody pipe, and two or three optional drone pipes providing a continuous accompanying harmony.
The Highland bagpipes are the national instrument of Scotland. The Highland pipe of Scotland, the most well-known type, was a martial instrument and from it comes the modern great pipe; but at least six other types were once used in the British Isles. I think one of the mistakes made today is to play such a powerful instrument within a confined area. Small-Bagpipes There are also a set of ornaments usually used for pìobaireachd, for example the dare, vedare, chedare, darado, taorluath and crunluath. They were to play outside her window of a morning for fifteen minutes depending on which castle she was residing. This tradition continued until her death in 2002. The popularity of the pipes grew and were spread across Europe by migrants. Small-Bagpipes As a result, notes cannot be separated by simply stopping blowing or tonguing so gracenotes and combinations of gracenotes, called embellishments, are used for this purpose. A set of bagpipes minimally consists of an air supply, a bag, a chanter, and usually a drone.
Although less so now, depending on the tuning of the player, certain notes are tuned slightly off just intonation, for example, the D could be tuned slightly sharp for effect. The air escapes through the drones and chanter, via reeds placed within each pipe. Small-Bagpipes Pipe music has existed for many years and is often represented in art and artifacts dating over 4000BC. The chanter usually has eight finger holes, two tone holes, and a range of nine notes from low G to high A. Playing the Great Highland Bagpipe is also used for a solo virtuosic style called piobaireachd or pibroch. Some occasions call for traditional kilt and attire, decorated in the pattern of your clan and others for less traditional needs of clothing. Small-Bagpipes Certain families became synonymous with the pipes and particular melodies. They were often played at celebrations where they were used to sing and dance to. Despite the decline of these other types of pipes over the last few centuries, in recent years many of these pipes have seen a resurgence or even revival as traditional musicians have sought them out; for example, the Irish piping tradition, which by the mid 20th century had declined to a handful of master players is today alive, well, and flourishing a situation similar to that of the Asturian gaita, the Galician gaita, the Aragonese Gaita de boto, Northumbrian smallpipes, the Breton Biniou, the Balkan Gaida, the Turkish Tulum, the Scottish smallpipes and Pastoral pipes, as well as other varieties.
