Due to the lack of rests and dynamics, all expression in GHB music comes from the use of embellishments and to a larger degree by varying the duration of notes. The Highland Bagpipe in its original form was constructed from reeds. These three single gracenotes (G, D, and E) are the most commonly used and are often played in succession. Song-Books They eventually made their way to the Highlands of Scotland where they were embraced by the clans. Some form of bagpipe was later used in nearly every European country; it was particularly fashionable in 18th-century France, where it was called the musette. Pipe music has existed for many years and is often represented in art and artifacts dating over 4000BC. Song-Books It is an instrument that was used for ceremonies and played a large role in the myths, stories and makings that are part of the rich tales of Scotland and its people. The British Isles embraced the haunting tunes of the pipes in approximately 1300 and eventually developed the pipes into what we now recognize as the music created by the Highland bagpipes.
Probably the song most played by bagpipers and bagpipe bands is Scotland The Brave. Song-Books The air escapes through the drones and chanter, via reeds placed within each pipe. The island of Skye was the home of a school for pipers. It caused great emotion and patriotism from the soldiers as it wailed away on a battle field. Song-Books The popularity of the pipes grew and were spread across Europe by migrants. A modern set has a bag, a chanter, a blowpipe, two tenor drones, and one bass drone. Its widest use and greatest development was in the British Isles, particularly Northumberland, Ireland, and Scotland. Examples of bagpipes include the old French musette, Scottish and Irish pipes, smaller Northumbrian pipes, Breton biniou, Spanish gaita, and numerous variants in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Song-Books The GHB is usually played in a standing position with the bag held between the piper's arm and side. The Great Highland Bagpipe is classified as a woodwind instrument, like the bassoon, oboe, or clarinet. The two tenor drones are an octave below the keynote (Low A) of the chanter) and the bass drone two octaves below. Song-Books Although it is classified as a double reed instrument, the reeds are all closed inside the wooden stocks, instead of being played directly by mouth as other woodwinds are. The drones produce a constant tone in accompaniment to the chanter. The three big pipes, called drones, are enclosed in a leather bag that's typically covered up with a colorful decorative bag.
