The name bagpipe has almost become synonymous with its best-known form, the Great Highland Bagpipe, overshadowing the great number and variety of traditional forms of bagpipe. The chanter usually has eight finger holes, two tone holes, and a range of nine notes from low G to high A. Its widest use and greatest development was in the British Isles, particularly Northumberland, Ireland, and Scotland. I think one of the mistakes made today is to play such a powerful instrument within a confined area. Sheet-Music-Song-Books The Great Highland Bagpipe (Gaelic : A' Phìob Mhòr, in English often abbreviated GHB) is a type of bagpipe native to Scotland, which has achieved widespread recognition through its usage in the British military and achieved the widespread prominence it enjoys today, whereas other bagpipe traditions throughout Europe, ranging from Spain to Russia, almost universally went into decline by the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For centuries the Scots used the bagpipe as a weapon of war. However, today the notes of the chanter are usually tuned in just intonation to the Mixolydian scale. The GHB usually has three drones: two tenor drones tuned an octave below the chanter's low A, and a longer bass drone tuned one octave below the tenor drones. Sheet-Music-Song-Books Some of these embellishments have found their way into light music over the course of the 20th century.
The three big pipes, called drones, are enclosed in a leather bag that's typically covered up with a colorful decorative bag. The drones rest against the piper's shoulder and point upward. The piper produces sound by inflating the bag and applying pressure to the bag with the arm. Sheet-Music-Song-Books Most bagpipes also have additional drones (and sometimes chanters) in various combinations, held in place in stocks—connectors with which the various pipes are attached to the bag. Pipe music has existed for many years and is often represented in art and artifacts dating over 4000BC. The bagpipe is first attested in Scotland around 1400, having first appeared in European artwork in Spain in the 1200s. It is very rousing hearing massed pipe bands playing this song at tatoos or highland games. Sheet-Music-Song-Books The island of Skye was the home of a school for pipers. Though the Scottish Great Highland Bagpipe and Irish uilleann pipes have the greatest international visibility, bagpipes of several varieties can be found in use throughout Europe, Northern Africa, the Persian Gulf, and the Caucasus.
Dozens of types of bagpipes today are widely spread across Europe and the Middle East, as well as through much of the former British Empire. The scale on the chanter is in Mixolydian mode, which has a flattened 7th or leading tone. Sheet-Music-Song-Books The popularity of the pipes grew and were spread across Europe by migrants. The bagpipes are used in Scotland mostly at dances, weddings, funerals, and of course the all-important function of piping the haggis on Burns Night. The Highland bagpipes are the national instrument of Scotland. In particular, the main beats and off-beats of each phrase are structured, however, sub-divisions within each beat are flexibl About 100 years ago, the traditional bagpipe became standardized in its modern form as the Great Highland Bagpipe. Sheet-Music-Song-Books Many British folktales feature a piper and their bagpipes. It is an instrument that was used for ceremonies and played a large role in the myths, stories and makings that are part of the rich tales of Scotland and its people. A set of bagpipes minimally consists of an air supply, a bag, a chanter, and usually a drone.
The GHB actually has four reeds; the chanter reed (double), two tenor drone reeds (single), and one bass drone. Sheet-Music-Song-Books
